For developing swimmers ready to discuss the next stage after foundational lessons. Tell the team about the swimmer’s current level and recent experience before choosing a squad.
Healthways publishes Level 5 Development Squad and Levels 6–7 Squads. The team can confirm which pathway and session are appropriate for a Development and Advanced Squads enquiry.

• Who it’s for: Placement by ability

• Session length: Confirm session length

• Learning format: Squad pathway

Skills develop at an individual pace. These are learning goals, not guaranteed outcomes after a set number of lessons.

• Refine technique: Develop more effective strokes and improve swimming efficiency.

• Build endurance: Extend sustained swimming and develop speed as technique improves.

• Keep developing skills: Advanced squads combine stroke work, survival skills and fitness.

The development pathway introduces the squad environment. Advanced squads extend technique, speed and endurance, with a recreational setting for swimmers who enjoy swimming or want to pursue competition. Ask about the specific session structure and length when enquiring.

Getting ready:
• Swimwear, a towel and a bag for wet clothing.
• Any goggles or equipment already used in lessons; ask the team what is required.
• Your most recent level or assessment information, if available.

Allow time to check in and get changed. Mention any access or support needs when arranging your first visit.

• Stroke Correction: Focus on technique, endurance and speed before or alongside a squad pathway.

• Level 5 Development Squad: An introduction to squad swimming without requiring a competitive goal.

• Levels 6–7 Squads: More advanced stroke and survival skills, endurance and fitness.

Assessments and next steps
Teachers review progress and recommend a suitable next level when the swimmer is ready. Teacher assessments generally take place every four to six weeks. Progress reviews set goals; skill evaluations record development towards the next level.
